Despite strong leadership from junior Kelsey Crocker, the Dowagiac volleyball team was swept by visiting Sturgis in a Wolverine Conference match Thursday.

The Trojans defeated the Chieftains 25-21, 25-14 and 25-19.

The first set saw Sturgis take a 3-1 lead early, with Dowagiac getting back into it by capitalizing on some errant hits by the Trojans.

After tying it up at 5-5, a few net violations and a nice run by the Chieftains, led by Crocker, who had two nice digs to get some points on the board, allowed Dowagiac to take a  12-7 lead.

Sturgis responded with an 8-4 run, led by senior Brianna Wheeler and sophomore libero Sage Groves, as the Trojans rallied and won the set 25-21.

The second set was one to remember, as the Trojans jumped out to a quick 10-0 advantage.

A late rally by Crocker and Taylore Froehlich was not enough, and a mixture of miscommunication and miss hits led to the Chieftains dropping the set 25-14.

Rallying from a 2-0 set deficit seems nearly impossible, but the Chieftains did not go down without a fight.

Libero Natalie Davis had a few kills from beyond the 10-foot line, and Crocker led the way with her defense, setting up her teammates and scoring on her own.

Jenna Davis had a big set, scoring six of her own points. Despite the efforts, Dowagiac came up short, 25-19.
