LANSING — Sen. John Proos on Thursday congratulated Cornerstone Alliance for receiving a state grant to help build a pedestrian bridge over the Paw Paw River, connecting the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.

“This is outstanding news for the people of Berrien County and the entire southwest Michigan region,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “This is more than just about constructing a bridge. It’s about connecting our communities and revitalizing our core cities.

“Once completed, this pedestrian bridge will help improve the quality of life for area residents and workers and support the tremendous investment that Whirlpool is making to its tech center. In this supportive effort, the bridge will help attract top talent and promote healthy lifestyles.”

The Michigan Strategic Fund on Tuesday approved a $1.2 million performance-based grant to the Cornerstone Alliance for construction of the 12-foot wide, 210-foot long bridge. The span will have the same height clearance as the Whitwam Road bridge, to ensure it does not block kayakers and other watercraft on the river.

The Whirlpool Corporation is planning a $35 million renovation to the company’s St. Joseph Technology Center on Upton Drive. The proposed investment includes a 100,000-square-foot addition, renovations to the offices, and state-of-the-art engineering labs.
