Some good Samaritans on N. Fourth Street rescued a snapping turtle that was spotted near the street Wednesday morning.

Leanne Zavitz, a hairstylist at Off Main Street said she spotted the turtle and wanted to help get the animal get to somewhere safe.

Other passersby joined her in her mission.

Jeanne Horner, of Niles, grabbed a box and volunteered to transport the turtle to a spot in the woods behind her house.

“When I see animals on the road, I know they don’t have a chance,” Horner said. “They need a little help with the way the world is now.”

Zavitz and Horner and at least four other spectators gathered in front of the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce, where the turtle was stuck on the sidewalk.

Using a snow shovel Zavitz and Horner were eventually able to transport the turtle into a cardboard box, even after the animal eluded his rescuers by hiding in a nearby bush. After pulling the turtle out with a stick, the volunteers were able to lift the turtle into a box.

“It feels like we did two nice things in one day,” Zavitz said.
