What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any programs, and all programs are free. Monday, Sept. 18

6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

The library is starting a new game night just for tweens, aged 9 to 12. There will be Xbox 360 (or Xbox One) and board games available, as well as art and crafts supplies. Tweens are invitied to join in a game night. Snacks will be provided.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved at the library from 7 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday. For more information visit cdaweb.org/

Tuesday, Sept. 19

• 10 a.m. to noon — Special Edition: Movie Day

Special Edition is a series of programs designed to be especially accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs. Anyone is welcome to attend. The activity will take place in the community room. This month’s feature is Disney’s “Moana.”

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. there will be a story time tour of the world. Each week, the library will have books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the country of the month.

• 4 to 5:30 p.m. — NDL Board Meeting

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This activity includes a read aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while readers eat chips and follow along.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Women’s 12-Step Meeting

This group is for women searching for guidance through the 12 steps of AA.  All are welcome to join this drop-ins group.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Building Challenge

Chilredn are invited to demonstrate their creativity with a bucket of Legos.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Creative Cooking: Blender Battles!

The community is invited to the first creative cooking class at the Niles District Library. This activity is for those looking for some recipes to make with a blender or food processor. From smoothies to soup, pesto to pancakes, blenders can be a useful kitchen tool for healthy and tasty eating. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their favorite recipes to share, too. Wednesday, Sept. 20

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months-5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3 and older) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Card and Scrapbook Making

The community is invited to bring a scrapbooking project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while you chat and work. Rookies are welcome. Meet new, crafty friends who can also provide help and instructions. There is a limited amount of supplies. The location depends on where there is a comfortable area that can hold everyone. Usually it takes place in the Rotunda.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Michigan Legal Help- Public Information Session

Those with questions about wills, divorce paperwork, or other legal issues can speak with an attorney from Legal Aid of Western Michigan.  The legal services they offer Michigan residents will be free of charge.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Readers Circle Book Group

Led by Sally Ginter, Readers Circle members have conversations about books from a wide variety of genres.  This activity is for serious book lovers and new members are welcome.  Books are available at the information desk.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Thursday, Sept. 21

• 10 a.m. — The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless. The Connection offers the following services and resources when available: community referrals, housing information, housing case management, eviction assistance, rental assistance, and security deposit assistance.

• 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

For children ages 3 and up. Storytime features three books, a color song, and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play.  Other board games are also available.

• 4:30 to 6 p.m. — Safe Shelter Support Group

This is weekly support group for survivors of domestic violence.  Drop-ins are welcome.  For more information about Safe Shelter and the services they provide, visit their website at cfsswmi.org/our-programs/safe-shelter.html. • 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to come and hang out Thursday evening for a night dedicated to youth. There will be games, snacks, books, and a great place to study here in the Teen Department. 

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Niles History: Fall Program Series

The Niles District Library and the Niles History Center welcome Scott Topping, dean of the school of arts and sciences at Southwestern Michigan College’s Niles Campus, for an insightful look at the life of the celebrated author (and Niles native), sports writer and humorist Ring Lardner.  Admission is free; donations will be accepted.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Drop-In Book Club

The community is invited to participate in this monthly book club.  There will be discussion on recommended books in this new style of book club. Each month, a different genre of literature is chosen and each book club member reads a different book in that genre. This is a drop-in book club so those participating can stay as long as they want. 

Friday, Sept. 22

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with the opportunity for group fellowship and recognition. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS has helped millions of people live healthier lives. New members are welcome.

• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Participants are invited to bring a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on a yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome. The teacher and a few loaner tools will be available to help get beginners started.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Movies That Move

The community is invited to view a screening of “A League of Their Own” (rated PG). The 1992 film stars Tom Hanks and Geena Davis and is about an all-American girls professional baseball League.

Saturday, Sept. 23

• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga

Saturday morning yoga is back. This class is free and appropriate for all abilities. Those participating are advised to dress comfortably and to bring both water and a mat.
