Woman hospitalized after alleged attack in park on S. 15th and Silverbrook streets

A woman in her early 30s was hospitalized with two lacerations after she was allegedly attacked by a male suspect at the park on S. 15th and Silverbrook streets, according to the Niles Police Department.

Police responded to the call Wednesday afternoon around 3:22 p.m. after some people passing by reported seeing a woman needing help in the streets.

Niles Police Chief Jim Millin said the woman had pulled her car, a blue four door Chevy Cobalt, into the north side of the park. She told authorities a white male attempted to drag her into the tree line nearby.

“She was not able to give us a whole lot of information,” Millin said. “Unfortunately, we were not able to get a whole lot out of her, so we are trying to piece things together.”

The woman was taken to the hospital via SMCAS. She had a laceration on her left arm and abdomen. Authorities do not know her condition at this time.

Millin said it is not clear at this time whether the crime was an assault or sexual conduct situation. The relationship between victim and suspect is also not known.

Millin said police were canvassing the neighborhood for additional information. Niles police canine Riggs was brought on scene to help search the area.  Authorities also spoke with neighbors, but said they had not yet found someone who had

“Why she is here or what is going on we don’t know,” Millin said. “Those are the things we are hoping to find out when we talk to her.”

He encouraged anyone with information to contact the police department.

“If anybody happened to be driving by and saw this car pull in or saw her out around it or saw a male over here or anybody, we would love to know about it,” Millin said.

The Niles Police Department, Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Niles Fire Department and SMCAS responded to the scene.
