ST. JOSEPH — On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass counties will present a noon luncheon featuring an expert on Japanese Knotweed, a major invasive species in this area, at Coach’s Restaurant, Stevensville.

Master gardener Rubia Jasinevicius, of New Buffalo, will offer information on identifying Japanese knotweed and will cover the aggressive nature of this invasive species once it becomes established.  This will include local examples of the damage of which Japanese knotweed is capable — including damaging buildings, public infrastructure, storm drains, sewers, streets, parking lots, homes, landscapes, and its ecological havoc on native plant and animal species. She also will share insight on the difficulty of eradicating this invasive species, once established.

Jasinevicius also will discuss her desire to form a Japanese Knotweed Task Force to help educate the public and property owners about the ominous presence of this invasive species.

Jasinevicius will conclude with information on how to report, track and reach out to the advocates of Berrien County’s Conservation District who are willing to assist with Japanese Knotweed.

Those interested in attending can register for the event and join the League of Women Voters for this informative presentation and help “Spread the word and not the knotweed,” Jasinevicius’ motto.

Jasinevicius is a Board Member and the Event Coordinator at Friendship Botanic Gardens, Michigan City, Indiana.
