What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any programs, and all programs are free. Monday, Sept. 11

• 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Chair Yoga

Tammy Pressler will teach the class about the benefits of yoga while doing poses in a sturdy chair. Those who attend can learn some breath techniques and rebuild balance along the way. • 4 to 5 p.m. — Friends of the Niles District Library Meeting

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

The library is starting a new game night just for tweens aged 9 to 12. There will be Xbox 360 (or Xbox One) and board games available. As well as art and crafts supplies. Tweens are invitied to join in a game night. Snacks will be provided.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Building Challenge

A bucket of Legos is provided and participants are welcome to demonstrate their creativity.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved at the library from 7 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday. For more information please visit cdaweb.org/

Tuesday, Sept. 12

• 8 to 9:30 a.m. — Drip-In Book Club

This book club is for those searching for the next great read. Each month, a different genre of literature is chosen and each book club member reads a different book in that genre. At the meetings, the book club will discuss recommendations for what to read next. This is a drop-in book club so those interested can stay as long as they want. This month’s genre is mystery.

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. there will be a story time tour of the world. Each week, the library will have books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the country of the month.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This activity includes a read aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while readers eat chips and follow along. This is fun for all ages.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Women’s 12-Step Meeting

This group is for women searching for guidance through the 12 steps of AA.  All are welcome to join this drop-ins group.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

A fun evening of three stories, music, and movement, and a craft. Those interested are invited to wear their pajamas.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

This book club meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Those who attend will read, cook, eat and discuss. Those interested can sign up at the information desk and receive a copy of the book.

Wednesday, Sept. 13

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months-5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3+) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Michigan Works/ Kinexus

Talent Development Specialists can help those in need register for unemployment, evaluate their career strengths and skills, edit or help update their resume, sharpen their interview skills and more.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Thursday, Sept. 14

• 10 a.m. — The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless. The Connection offers the following services and resources when available: community referrals, housing information, housing case management, eviction assistance, rental assistance, and security deposit assistance.

• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Triple P: Positive Parenting Program

For parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills that will promote their child’s development and potential. Discussion group topics will include: positive parenting, dealing with disobedience, managing fighting and aggression, developing good bedtime routines, and hassle-free shopping with children.

• 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

For children ages 3 and up. Storytime features three books, a color song, and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play.  Other board games are also available.

• 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Triple P: Positive Parenting Program

For parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills geared towards raising teenagers.

• 4:30 to 6 p.m. — Safe Shelter Support Group

This is weekly support group for survivors of domestic violence.  Drop-ins are welcome.  For more information about Safe Shelter and the services they provide, visit their website at cfsswmi.org/our-programs/safe-shelter.html. • 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to come and hang out Thursday evening for a night dedicated to youth. There will be games, snacks, books, and a great place to study here in the Teen Department. 

Friday, Sept. 15

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with the opportunity for group fellowship and recognition. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS has helped millions of people live healthier lives. New members are welcome.

• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Participants are invited to bring a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on a yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome. The teacher and a few loaner tools will be available to help get beginners started.

Saturday, Sept. 16

• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess Club

This club is for those who love to play chess? This group meets twice monthly to play. All ages and abilities are welcome. Those who do not know how to play can be taught at the club. This activity takes place in the children’s department.

• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga

Saturday morning yoga is back. This class is free and appropriate for all abilities. Those participating are advised to dress comfortably and to bring both water and a mat.

• 11 a.m. to noon – Insect Farewell Party

Now that it is fall, some of the region’s bugs will go away for the cold months. Children are invited to give them a good send off. There will be a buggy storytime, crafts, snack, and games. This activity takes place in the Children’s Department; for ages birth-12.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Injustice Tournament

The Niles District Library has a new game. Staff are searching for teens to come and test out the game. Snacks and friendly encouragement will be provided.
