A pair of Niles residents were injured Friday afternoon after their vehicles collided on U.S. Highway 12 in Milton Township, according to officials with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched to a reported personal injury crash on the highway near the off ramp from Detroit Road outside of Niles around 5:38 p.m.

Police said the accident was caused when 84-year-old Robert Rodgers was driving onto the highway from the Detroit Road ramp. After turning left at the stop sign to head east on U.S. 12, Rodgers failed to properly judge the distance of a westbound vehicle driven by 27-year-old Wen-Hui Zheng, and crashed into the other car.

Rodgers was transported by SMCAS for injuries to South Bend Memorial, and Zheng was transported by SMCAS to Lakeland Hospital in Niles.

All parties involved were wearing seatbelts and airbags were deployed. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Niles Charter Township Fire and SMCAS.
