Mason Township — A 2-year-old child was killed in a fatal accident in Mason Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies report that the accident occurred at 7 p.m. Monday in the 20000 block of Old 205 in Mason Township.

The accident took place during a family birthday party at the residence. Betty Utt, a 64-year-old family member from Elkhart, was pulling into the driveway when her vehicle struck 2-year-old Nayla Ryans, daughter of Odilia and Andrew Ryans of Elkhart. Utt continued down the driveway, running Ryans over. Family members began doing CPR until EMS arrived to take over. Ryans was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by Porter Township Ambulance.

Ryans was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to deputies, though the case remains under investigation.
