A sea of silver hair filled the Edwardsburg Intermediate School cafeteria Sunday as old friends reunited, some for the first time in decades.

Edwardsburg All Class Reunion took place at 1 p.m. Sunday. The potluck style event served as a reunion that any graduate in any year from Edwardsburg High School was invited to attend. The class of 1967 was honored at the event for its 50th anniversary, as part of a full weekend of reunion events for the class.

As graduates from decades gone by, some from the 1940s, walked around the cafeteria and ate their potluck meal, they greeted old friends and caught each other up on the ways their lives had changed since high school.

“Just catching up and reminiscing about some of the fun things we did in school has been fun,” said Nancy Bowman, of the class of 1967.

Many who attended the event said that it didn’t feel like decades had passed since they had graduated. Instead, it felt like “just yesterday.”

“It feels like I’ve just seen all these people,” said Darlene Raab, of the class of 1967. “We’ve all been friends for so many years. It’s wonderful to renew these friendships and celebrate 50 years.”

While All Class Reunion organizer Birdella Carpenter Holdread, of the class of 1965, said that many of the attendants came from Edwardsburg or neighboring towns, some travelled long distances from out of state or out of country to come to the reunion.

Kristina Almberg, of the class of 1967, without a doubt travelled the farthest. An exchange student during her time at Edwardsburg High School, Almberg, a resident of Sweden, travelled thousands of miles to attend the reunion activities last weekend.

“[Being an exchange student] was a great experience. It was a different from the beginning, very different from home where I came from,” she said of her time as an exchange student. “After that year, I learned and I  thought I had so much to take with me. I still do. That year meant so much to me.”

Almberg was not the only exchange student to attend the All Class Reunion.

Though he lives in the area now, Perry Niemhuis, of the class of 1966, originally came to Edwardsburg as an exchange student from the Netherlands when he was 17 years old.

He reminisced about how on his first day at Edwardsburg High School, because he was a soccer player in the Netherlands, he was drafted into becoming the kicker for the football team, despite having never heard of American football before.

“It was really interesting,” Blank said. “[Edwardsburg High School] opened me up to a lot of new experiences. It’s nice to remember.”

No matter where they were coming from, most attendants to the reunion agreed that the event was a nice reason to catch up with old friends.

“It really does give everyone the chance to see each other and have fun,” Carpenter Holdread said.
