A Niles man was hospitalized Friday after crashing his motorcycle into a ditch while swerving out of the way of another vehicle in Milton Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched to a reported single vehicle crash near U.S. Highway 12 and Gumwood Road around 1:22 p.m.

The crash occurred when a white vehicle, which police believe was a Cadillac DeVille, turned in front of a group of motorcyclists traveling on U.S. Highway 12. The bikers swerved to avoid hitting the oncoming car, though one of the drivers, 24-year-old Kraiger Kennedy, lost control of his bike and crashed into a ditch on the north side of the highway, west of Gumwood Road.

None of the motorcyclists collided with the white vehicle, which continued driving toward Niles.

Crews with SMCAS Ambulance Service transported the injured Kennedy to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police do not believe alcohol contributed to the accident. Kennedy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.

People with information on the white vehicle involved are asked to contact the Cass County Office of Sheriff at (269) 445-1560 or to call their local law enforcement agency.

Crews with the Niles Township Fire Department and SMCAS Ambulance service assisted deputies at the scene.
