Those with a hankering for a home style meal need look no further than the outskirts of Edwardsburg.

Carry-out only restaurant DaBarrels opened Tuesday on M-62 in Edwardsburg to much community anticipation. The restaurant, owned by and named after a nickname for Edwardsburg native Troy Reynolds will serve a variety of foods including pizza, homemade meatballs, calzones, Stromboli, fried chicken, sausage and subs. The restaurant will be open from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 3:30 through 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

“I’ve already had a ton of people stopping in here while I’m setting up wanting to know if we are open,” Reynolds said five days before his scheduled open date. “I [had] to keep telling people to wait until Tuesday.”

A family run operation, Reynolds, who learned to cook at the former Rib Shack in Granger, Indiana, where he worked in high school, plans to create each item on the menu with care and expertise.

“I always like to cook at home. My mom is a great cook, too,” Reynolds said. “I like to put my passion into everything. I don’t like frozen and I try to make everything from scratch.”

DaBarrels will be modeled after a restaurant Reynolds ran in Bristol, Indiana called Danny K’s. Due to issues with location, Reynolds shuttered the doors to Danny K’s in Bristol, Indiana, but has kept the logo for Danny K’s out front of his new storefront to let customers know that they will be getting the same food they used to get at Danny K’s.

“We weren’t going to make any money in [Bristol], so we kind of closed it,” Reynolds said. “I’ve been waiting for an opportunity over here, because I’ve always lived here and we’ve always done things here.”

Reynolds got his opportunity when the location where DaBarrels now stands, at 69821 M-62, opened up in March.

“This is the first place that became available since the last place closed, so we were semi-ready for it,” Reynolds said with a laugh. “It’s nice to finally be in Edwardsburg. It’s home and we know a lot of people here.”

Though Reynolds is happy with where he is now, bringing his business back home to Edwardsburg, he still has many plans for the future.

First, he would like to add brisket to his menu, as the dish was a crowd pleaser at his previous restaurant Danny K’s. However, his new location does not have adequate space for the smoker needed to make brisket, so finding a way to make brisket at the new store-front will be one of the first challenges. Reynolds also said he would love to add dessert to the menu, as he enjoys baking and creating sweets.

In addition to expanding the menu, Reynolds hopes to eventually gain more space so that customers can dine in-store.

“I’d like to expand the DaBarrel’s line of food,” he said.

No matter what may happen in the future, Reynolds is confident that his restaurant will do well in Edwardsburg.

“What we are doing here is kind of unique,” Reynolds said. “I think that resonates with people.”
