Niles Mayor Nick Shelton organized a cleanup of Riverfront Park Saturday.

Shelton said he had heard some complaints about the trash in the park and wanted to do something about it. Shelton posted a Facebook event, inviting members of the community to join him Saturday in the effort to clean the park.

Approximately 30 volunteers, including members of the Miss Niles court, showed up to help. Volunteers pruned shrubs, cleaned dirt from sidewalk cracks and picked up trash in the park, planters and alleyways across downtown.

“It does not take a lot to look a million times better,” Shelton said. “We have got a beautiful park system and it’s going to take the efforts of the community to keep it that way.”

Volunteer Bruce Leach helped to scrape dirt from the cracks Saturday. The former fire marshal said he wished to see a bigger turnout in the future.

Shelton recognized the efforts of those who did participate and said he hopes to continue regular park cleanup sessions.

“There are a lot of people who are passionate about Niles,” Shelton said.
