Ranger band plays halftime

It is the end of the world as we know it, and the Ranger Marching Band feels fine.

In the dead heat of July, many southwest Michigan locals sought refuge in air conditioned homes and movie theaters. Some escaped to a local lake or pond and others stock-piled box fans.

The heat was relentless, the humidity was brutal and the sun was a harbinger of sadness for the unprepared.

On July 17, 40 brave souls said nay to the dangers of this wasteland, and marched forth to glory, to greatness and to the completion of an epic marching band half-time show.

The Cassopolis Ranger Marching Band spent more than 43 hours learning and perfecting their 2017 marching show: “Apocalypse!” between the dates of July 17 and July 22.  Thirty-three of these hours were spent outdoors memorizing their movements or “drill” for performance.  The show, conducted by drum major Sydney Brooks, consists of five melodies/tunes including: “Theme from Fallout,” “I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire,” “Radioactive,” “Duck and Cover” and “Ride of the Valkyries.”

The second tune features solos by Amelia Ayers (mellophone), Tristin Gless (baritone), and Chase Scheunemann-Thomas (alto saxophone).

The week was not only a testament to the resolve of the Ranger band, but also exemplified the overwhelming support of the community.

Dussel’s Farm Market & Greenhouses donated a gigantic box of bananas, Porky’s Party Place delivered 10 pizzas to the band, Harding’s supplied ice cream, Broadway Café donated an extra-large salad, Big R Stores donated a large quantity of water balloons, and the Cassopolis Public School system provided lunches.

What’s more, a small army of Cassopolis band parents volunteered to provide dinner and organized evening activities for students at the end of each day.  Also, the Central Cass County Fire Protection District hosted a fire-truck slip ‘n slide on the hottest day of the week.  The Ranger Band thanks these organizations/individuals for their time and generosity.

For those who missed the July 22 performance, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to watch the Ranger marching band once their stadium renovations are complete.  Beyond these four home games, the band will also be performing at the Otsego Marching Band Invitational on Sept. 30, and at the District VI MSBOA Marching Band Invitational on Oct. 11.
