Thomas Fehlner, a chemist and artist’s work “You Only Live Twice” will be on display at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at the Niles District Library in the Community Room, Niles District Library, 620 East Main St.

After a 41-year career as professor of chemistry at the University of Notre Dame, Fehlner entered retirement in 2006 with the intention of re-exploring the world of art—a topic that engaged him as a youth but was put aside for a career in science.

Largely self-taught Fehlner’s activities to date have ranged from drawing to watercolor to oil painting.  Figures and landscapes form the subjects of this art, initially carried out in a realistic, albeit not photographic, style, but more the recently evolving in a more fanciful manner.

Fehlner is a member of the Niles Art Association and the Northern Indiana Artists and has been accepted into regional juried shows since 2006.  He has exhibited his art in solo shows at the Buchanan Art Center as well as the Box Factory for the Arts.
