Those looking to jam out under the summer night sky will have their chance at the Edwardsburg Sports Complex.

The ESC will host an outdoor concert featuring local band Little Something from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 12. The cost to attend the all-ages event is $10 per vehicle, and organizers encourage those planning to attend bring their own picnic blanket and lawn chairs to relax in while watching the event.

A small number of food vendors, including an ice cream truck and a barbecue vendor, will also be at the event.

The event will serve as a way for the complex to branch out of its comfort zone by providing different types of community events, said ESC event coordinator Patty Patzer.

“We were throwing out ideas that weren’t necessarily sports related and would reach people who wouldn’t normally be out here for any reason to bring awareness to the sports complex and that we will be offering other types of events out here,” Patzer said. “It’s not all sporting events.”

Should the Little Something concert go well, Patzer hopes that the ESC will become synonymous with community events. The complex is already working on providing equipment and space for activities that is available to all ages.  The pavilion where the concert will be held can even be rented out for a plethora of community events, including church services, family reunions, parties and concerts.

“We want to be known as a community location that people can use for all kinds of things. That’s our goal and our mission,” Patzer said. “We’ve got a good central location for a lot of places in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. There’s a lot of communities that could take advantage of a sports complex here.”

The money raised by the concert will be used toward continued construction and development the ESC, Patzer said.

Little Something, an Americana band that has played covers and original music at many local venues, boasts three members from the Edwardsburg area, who are excited to take part in the outdoor concert.

“Being from Edwardsburg, it’s something that we wanted to do,” said bassist David Mortimer. “We wanted to give back.”

As the band is coming out with its first album this year, Mortimer hopes the event will create publicity for both the band and ESC, though helping out ESC is the band’s primary concern, he said.

The concert is something the band wanted to do for the sports complex, which is why the band is not charging for their services, Mortimer said.

“Kids need [the ESC]. Families need [the ESC],” he said. “Doing fundraisers like this is a way for our band to give back to the community using our talents. The exposure we get from this doesn’t mean as much as the exposure for the complex.”

Both the band and Patzer are hopeful that the concert will be a success.

“It’s hard to say what the turnout will be,” Patzer said. “But we hope people will show up and be good for the sports complex.”
