Two arrested on drug charges

DOWAGIAC — Two men were arrested on suspicions of dealing drugs on the streets of Dowagiac Saturday, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

A 25-year-old resident of Elkhart, Indiana, formerly of Dowagiac, and a 24-year-old Dowagiac man were arrested during a traffic stop on Thickstun Street, just north of Allen Street. Both were charged with multiple narcotic offenses, and were scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.

Officers became suspicious of the men while on patrol near the intersection of Thickstun and Allen streets, where they noticed the suspects’ vehicle parked near Walter Ward Park. When police drove past they noticed the driver of the vehicle, the 25-year-old Elkhart man, resembled someone who the department had issued an arrest warrant against. After stopping the vehicle, police located several narcotics and evidence of street-level drug dealing.

The passenger of the vehicle, the 24-year-old Dowagiac man, was also arrested for violating parole.

Officers were assisted at the scene by deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and county K-9 unit.

Village responds to sewer spill near jail

CASSOPOLIS — Crews with the Cassopolis Public Works Department responded to force main rupture near the Cass County Jail around 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the department.

An officer at the jail noticed water coming out of the ground and notified public works about it. The responding crews turned off the upstream lift station, and pumped and hauled the water inside to a downstream lift station in order to bypass the broken section of the pipe until the workers could repair the force main.

An estimated 100,000 gallons of water was spilled onto the ground during the rupture. Village crews poured neutralizing lime on the affected area.

Officials said the village will replace the force main with a new high-density polyethylene pipe, which should stop these types of breaks from happening in this section of pipe.
