Steve’s Run, the 43rd “Original Road and Trail Race,” starts on Southwestern Michigan College’s Dowagiac campus in front of the David C. Briegel Building at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 29.

Rose Middleton, of the Cassopolis Family Clinic Network, will sing the national anthem.

Keynote speaker at the 10 a.m. award ceremony afterward will be Amanda Goss, of Hartford, a mother of two diagnosed with breast cancer at 24 in October 2014.

Her ongoing treatment will send Goss to Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic, which Steve’s Run benefits along with the Steven Briegel Scholarship Fund.

Danielle Kennedy, a multimedia journalist with WSBT 22 News, South Bend, returns as mistress of ceremonies. Her mother underwent a double mastectomy when Kennedy was 11. Her uncle also survived acute leukemia diagnosed at 21.

Kennedy completed the 10K in 42:37, claiming her age division and finishing second overall to women’s winner Hannah Boudreau (41:11) of Hampstead, Maryland. Boudreau ran for Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Boudreau wore an Eddie Strong shirt for her uncle, Ed Kazlauskas, while visiting aunt Sue Kazlauskas, owner of Dowagiac’s The Marshall Shoppe.

Kennedy ran four years of cross country/track and field for State University of New York at Oneonta, making three NCAA Division III National Championship appearances and earning All-American cross country honors.

Portage Central senior Gannon Foley won the men’s 10K in 35.40, with Andrew Smenyak’s 36:04 second and Michael Callison’s 38:04 third.

David Jones of Constantine won the men’s 5K in 16:43. Sarah Cullip of Allendale won the women’s 5K in 20:10.

Six hundred and 41 competed in Steve’s Run in 2016.

This year’s awards will be bestowed by Steve’s father, SMC President Emeritus David C. Briegel, the college’s fifth president from 1981-1998.

Recognized as one of the 10 best vacation runs in the country, the event started in 1972.

This will be the 27th known as Steve’s Run, after previous permutations as the Road and Trail Race, the Bud Lite Run and the Nike-Fair Store Run, plus a two-year hiatus.

SMC and $7,000 donor Fifth Third Bank are the premier sponsors, with Clif Bar organic foods welcomed as a new in-kind sponsor this year.

Top male and female 10K and 5K winners receive SMC fleece sweatshirt blankets, high-quality bookstore SMC water bottles and Steve’s Run socks.

Sixteen age-group winners get SMC water bottles and Steve’s Run socks.

Steve, who died March 1, 1990, at 22 after a 5 ½-year battle, graduated fifth in the Dowagiac Union High School Class of 1986 and from SMC in 1988. He was a junior in Ferris State’s SMC program.
