Woman arrested on methamphetamine charges

DOWAGIAC — A Kalamazoo woman is in police custody on suspicions of attempting to sell methamphetamine in Dowagiac last week, according to a release from the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team.

According to officials with the taskforce, detectives were informed Thursday that a person would be coming to the Dowagiac area from Kalamazoo in order to sell methamphetamine. Police later located the vehicle of the suspected drug dealer at a parking lot in the 600 block of North Front Street in the city.

Officers detained the two men inside the vehicle, while a 32-year-old Kalamazoo woman was arrested as soon as she exited a nearby store. Police learned through the store’s surveillance system that the woman had fled to the bathroom after seeing police were at her vehicle prior to her arrest.

Police initially lodged the Kalamazoo woman on charges of conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute an analogous substance and destruction of evidence. One of the passengers, a 47-year-old Allegan man, was arrested on unrelated warrants.

Officers returned to the store the next day after learning the establishment’s toilet was no longer working. Working with crews from the Dowagiac Department of Public Services, officers removed the toilet and examined its contents, and discovered a bag of methamphetamine along with syringes.

After seizing the evidence, police also charged the suspect with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Authorities are withholding the woman’s name, pending her arraignment in Cass County court.
