Keeler Township (June 6)

Roll call: Present — Bill Kays, Carl Davis, Carmen Fleischauer, and Tom Landis; absent — Barb Fisher.

New hire: The board approved the hire of James Enochs as a new member of the Keeler Township Fire Department. A hiring committee reviewed Enochs’ application and recommended his approval as a probationary new member.

Zoning administrator: The board approved a motion to remove Rich Hutchinson as township zoning administrator effective June 7, as the previous zoning administrator, Allyn Anthony, was ready to return to work. The board also approved a motion to return Hutchinson to the zoning board of appeals as an alternate, effective June 7.

Rezoning: The board approved a motion by roll call vote to not rezone several areas, due to concerns about the effect the changes would have on tax base and water quality, among other complaints. YES: Davis, Landis, Fleischauer and Kays. ABSENT: Fisher.

Legal updates: The board approved a recommendation to refer several township residents to the township attorney due to unresolved zoning and safety complaints.

SOS grant purchase program: The board approved the adoption of the SOS Grant Purchase Program by roll call vote, at the behest of the Van Buren County Clerk. YES: Davis, Landis, Fleischauer and Kays. ABSENT: Fisher.

Principles of governance: The board approved a resolution to adopt the Michigan Township Association’s “Principles of Governance,” which a pledge to the township, state and country.
