The Cassopolis Village Council extended Police Chief Brian La Valle’s contract for three months of probation with stipulations that have yet to be made at its regular meeting Monday night.

The council, which hired La Valle to replace retiring Frank Williams after 41 years in June of 2016, met in closed session for nearly an hour for his review.

LaValle, who joined the Cassopolis Police Department in 2007, was given a one-year contract by the village last year. The council will host a workshop meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 24 to provide the stipulations of his probationary period.

The council was also scheduled to go into closed session to discuss the current police union contract, but tabled that until the workshop meeting due to the length of LaValle’s closed session.

Those discussions will once again be hosted in closed session. Village Manager Emilie Sarratore received the union’s latest counter offer Monday morning, which she shared with the council at the meeting.

Council members decided that they needed time to review the proposal before going into close dsession, which will include the union’s president, Don Obermesik, who volunteered to meet with them to answer any questions that may arise concerning the proposal.

The council also renewed its insurance contract with Par Plan, approved moving forward with a force main project and once again tabled an offer of property currently owned by Darrin Boyle.

The council felt it would be premature to make a decision on purchasing the property, which is adjacent to the Department of Public Works building.

In other action, the council:

• Approved the creation of an outdoor music permit for the village.

• Tabled the purchase of property for a village gateway sign on South O’Keefe Street.
