There is still time left to register for the Sister Lakes Triathlon.

The triathlon, which will be on Saturday, will benefit the Sister Lakes Corridor Improvement Authority’s bike path system connecting the lakes with other towns.

Participants can choose between four different divisions:

  • Olympic Triathlon: 1,000-meter swim, 22-mile bike, 6.35-mile run
  • Sprint Triathlon: 500-meter swim,13-mile bike, 5k run
  • Olympic Aquabike: 1,000-meter swim, 25-mile bike
  • Sprint Aquabike: 500-meter swim,13-mile bike

Registration is currently available online at register.chronotrack.com/r/25916. Registration will also be available onsite at the Sister Lakes Lions Club Friday night and Saturday morning.

Friday night registration and packet pick up begins at 5 p.m., according to Tom Neary. Registration on race day begins at 6 a.m. and wraps up at 7:10 a.m.

Those already registered may pick up their numbers and T-shirts Friday night.

The triathlon is now in its seventh year and is expecting more than 400 triathletes to participate Saturday, Neary said.

“It kind of fluxuates due to the economy,” Neary said about participants. “Triathletes are more affluent people because this can be expensive. They are usually athletes in training and this can cost up to $90, plus hotels and meals.

“It originally started slow because it was new and the economy was bad. We had approximately 400 racers last year and are expecting that again this year.”

Neary also said the event will last at least three more years due to its current contract.

The course is designed around a series of seven lakes in a 25-mile radius. The swim starts and exits from a vacant landowner’s lot with the transition across the street on another landowner’s vacant lot.

The bike course cuts through and around Sister Lakes with the running course circling around and through some of the lakes that the bike course does not.

The finish line is in Lions Club Park where the participants will find refreshments and a grilled lunch provided by the club.

Cost is $90 for individuals through Thursday, and then $100 (cash only) beginning Friday on site. For relay participants the cost is $120 through Thursday and $140 onsite.

Online registration closes at midnight on Thursday.

Neary said the first phase of the corridor project was completed last year, with the second phase set to begin later this month. That portion of the project will connect Keeler with Hartford.
