Visitors to the First United Methodist Church this weekend will have a chance to support several local good causes — and earn some fantastic deals while doing so.

The United Methodist Women will host its annual rummage and bake sale this weekend at the church, 326 N. Lowe St., Dowagiac. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The sale will take place on the first floor and basement of the Dowagiac church. Members of the congregation have donated hundreds of items for sale, including clothing, furniture, household items, books, toys, computer items and much, much more, said Louann Stemm, of one the church members pitching in with the event.

“There is a little bit of everything,” Stemm said.

Items range from free to around $15, she added. On Saturday, visitors will have the option of paying $4 for a brown paper sack, which they may fill with as many clothing items as the bag can hold.

Volunteers will sell goods baked by church members during the event as well, including breads, pies, brownies and a wide variety of cookies, Stemm said.

“People who don’t need something for the house can think with their stomach instead and pick up some sweets,” said Barbara Groner, another church member helping with the sale.

The United Methodist Women have hosted the sale for more than 20 years, Stemm said. The event typically draws several hundred visitors to the church over the course of the two days, raising thousands for charity.

Around 20 percent of the proceeds will go toward the United Methodist Committee on Relief, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency relief across the world, Groner said. The rest of the dollars will be spilt between several area charities, including the Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocate program, Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services, ACTION ministries, Crystal Springs Camp and Retreat, the Salvation Army of Cass County, Helping Hands of Cass County, Cass County Cancer Services, among others.

“We want to give back as much as we can and help other people, especially here locally,” Stemm said.

With such a vast selection of items — many of which are in almost-new condition —there should be plenty for everyone at the church this weekend, organizers said.

“We would like people to come out and find a good deal,” Stemm said.
