A Gobles man is dead after falling off his personal watercraft and drowning in Magician Lake Tuesday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Derek Jackson, 28, was operating his watercraft on the northeast corner of the lake around 5:02 p.m. when he struck a wave and was thrown from the vehicle, according to eyewitnesses. His vehicle then struck him.

Crews with Pride Care Ambulance transported Jackson to a landing zone set up by the Sister Lakes Fire Department, where a helicopter from Medflight landed to transport the victim to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Officials declared Jackson dead at the hospital. The Saint Joseph County Indiana Corner’s Office determined the death was caused by drowning.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and a personal flotation device was used. The crash remains under investigation at this time.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Pride Care Ambulance, Sister Lakes Fire Department, Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Keeler Fire Department, Pokagon Tribal Police and Medflight.
