Tomac overtakes Baggett for points lead

BUCHANAN — In the span of two weeks, Eli Tomac has erased Blake Baggett’s points lead in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series.

Back-to-back wins by Tomac, from Cortez, Colorado, has vaulted him to the top of the 450 Class points race.

At the RedBud National in Buchanan Saturday, Tomac won both motos and turned a four-point disadvantage into a 13-point lead heading into Saturday’s Red Bull Southwick National in Southwick, Massachusetts.

Tomac had to hold off a hard-charging Baggett to win the opening moto. He dominated the second moto, winning by 15.7 seconds and claiming his third consecutive moto.

“This is so awesome. The day could not have gone any better,” Tomac said. “I didn’t want to rush anything in the second moto as the pace was already pretty fast and gnarly. There was a lot of roost and tear-offs being pulled, so I just wanted to do my best to be smart. I took my time and slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually opened up a gap. It feels good to have a clean race and grab another win.”

Zach Osborne finished second in the opening moto of the 250 Class and went on to win the second moto to increase his series points lead.

Jeremy Martin captured the first moto, while his brother Alex Martin finished third in both motos to maintain his second place.

Osborne now leads Alex Martin by 38 points.

“The crowd at RedBud is definitely next level,” Osborne said. “The first moto I started just behind Jeremy [Martin], and we kind of went back and forth the whole moto. It sucked to lose it, but it was nice to at least be on the lead pace. It wasn’t a huge deal as we still scored good points. I never jumped LaRocco’s Leap all day and felt like I was able to make up for it in other sections of the track.”

Austin Wagner and Dillon Finley, 2014 Edwardsburg graduates, did not qualify for the main event Saturday.

Wagner finished ninth in the last chance qualifier, while Dillon finished 22nd.
