Marcellus’ Emma Pachay and Cassopolis’ Amy Adams have started a rivalry last year that will continue when their respective schools begin competition in the newly-formed Southwest 10 Conference.

The pair started their budding rivalry during track season as the pair traded finishing ahead of one another at the Division 4 regional and state finals.

That rivalry continued Saturday as Pachay successfully defending her Ranger Run 5K title by edging Adams.

Pachay ran a time of 22:18, while Adams was runner-up with a 22:22.

“The weather was fine and I felt okay,” Pachay said. “I have not been training for speed. This is when I begin training for the year.

“I like running past the lake. It is mostly downhill. It is pretty flat.”

Adams called their rivalry “friendly.”

“It is a little bit of one,” she said. “It is kind of switching out girls who run the same pace. [Pachay] and Jessie Reith have always been my close competition.

“I have been running a little bit here and there. I have been going to Indiana Dunes and running some. I plan to pick it up.”

Defending men’s champion Terrance Young of Eau Clairewas also able to hang on his title Saturday.

Young defeated runner-up Derrick Poorman by 20 seconds to win the men’s 5K title.

Young, who will be a senior at Eau Claire this fall and runs both cross country and track for the Beavers, posted a time of 18:35 in perfect conditions for running.

“The course is nice and cool,” he said. “There are a lot of trees and there are not a lot of hills.”

Poorman finished with an 18:55.

A total of 70 runners took part in this year’s event, which benefits the Cassopolis cross country and track programs.
