Edwardsburg, Dowagiac players earn all-region

Edwardsburg, the Division 2 regional runner-up, had four players named to the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association All-Regional team.

Dowagiac, which lost to the Eddies in the district finals, had a pair of players advance to the all-region team, which is the second step in the all-state process.

All-region players are now eligible to earn all-state status, which will be decided during the state finals this weekend in East Lansing.

Edwardsburg’s Allie Strycker (outfield), Savannah Dixon (second base), Layne Stinnett (third base) and Ashley Pion (pitcher) were named to the team.

Dowagiac’s Megan Soderbloom (catcher) and Amiyah Smith (utility) were also selected.

Soderbloom hit .461 with 16 doubles, a triple and 34 RBIs. She scored 21 runs in 38 games.

Smith hit .478 with 11 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 30 RBIs. She scored 43 runs in 36 games and stole 21 bases.

Dixon hit .417 with five doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 33 RBIs.

“Dixon is a four-year starter as a middle infielder playing second base and some shortstop,” said Edwardsburg coach Randy Brooks. “She is very steady and reliable on defense and improved her range and arm strength tremendously. Power numbers have really improved this year.”

Strycker hit .451 with three doubles, a triple and 18 RBIs. In the circle she was 14-4 with an ERA of 2.154. She struck out 98 in 117 innings pitched.

“Strycker is a four-year starter and a two-year captain, all-conference and all-state player for us,” Brooks said. “She is an outstanding leader and catalyst for us at bat. She is our leadoff hitter and leads the team in runs scored.”

Shoupe hit .367 with 10 doubles and 24 RBIs, while Dixon hit .424 with five doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 44 RBIs.

“She has been a contact hitter for us all four years,” Brooks said. “She has a good eye and seldom swings at bad pitches and works long into the count. She has pitched, played outfield, designated player and this year she has done a tremendous job at first base. (She) loves to work at hitting.”

Stinnett hit .455 with 14 doubles, 1 triple, eight home runs and 38 RBIs.

“Stinnett is a four-year starter mostly at third base, but also at catcher,” Brooks said.  She set the school home run record and broke it a couple of times. One of the best hitters I’ve coached. Battling through a major shoulder injury this year, she will not be able to continue playing in college.  She was named all-conference in softball all four years and All-state last year.”

Pion was 18-4 in the circle for the Eddies with an ERA of 1.663. She struck out 123 hitters in 134.2 innings pitched.

“A second-year pitcher for us, she has improved so much,” Brooks said. “We are blessed with two No. 1 pitchers with Ashley and Allie. She does a nice job of getting ahead of batters and then has a good rise ball that we get a lot of strikeouts and pop-ups with.”
