Buchanan falls to Schoolcraft in finals

COLOMA — The Buchanan baseball team reached the Division 3 regional championship game before bowing out of the state tournament Saturday.

The Bucks defeated Hopkins 13-3 in a six-inning semifinal contest before falling to Schoolcraft 4-2 in the championship game.

Buchanan ends its season 15-14.

In the championship game, Blake Bales and Rickie Clark combined on a seven-hitter for the Eagles, who advance to the state quarterfinals at Hope College against Homer Tuesday.

Schoolcraft (24-10) collected nine hits off of Bucks’ pitcher Kyle Leazenby.

The Eagles scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to open up a 4-0 lead on Buchanan, which scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Dalton Riddle and Brad VanOverberghe both finished with two hits, while Tanner Lilly singled and drove in both of the Bucks’ runs.

In the semifinals, Riddle tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk. Jacob Hoover pitched the sixth inning for the Bucks.

Riddle was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs, while Hoover was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Leazenby was 1-for-1 with three RBIs.
