Buchanan Board of Education  (May 15)

Warrants: The board voted to approve payment of payroll of $900,370.96 and payment of expenditures of $448,303.21 for invoices from the general fund, and payment of payroll of $13,215,06 and payment of expenditures of $86,577.42 for invoices from the school service fund. Yes: Unanimous.

Step Up and Virtual Academy graduates: The board voted to approve the graduation certification of Step Up students Vianca Garcia and Mary Scherer and Virtual Academy student Stephanie Shinall. Yes: Unanimous.

High school graduation certification: The board voted to approve the roster of Buchanan High School students certified for graduation. Yes: Unanimous.

High school athletic handbook for 2017-2018: The board voted to approve the 2017-2018 athletic handbook as submitted by Athletic Director Lonnie Hoover. Yes: Unanimous.

Berrien RESA board biennial election: The board voted to adopt a resolution that would designate Sandy Tobler as the representative of the Buchanan Board of Education to serve on the 2017 electoral body for the BRESA board of education with Kelly Laesch as an alternative; choose to support Linda Holt to serve a six-year term on the BRESA; choose to support J. Allene Smith to serve a six-year term on the BRESA; direct Tobler to vote for Holt and Smith on the June 5 ballot; direct board secretary Ruth Writer to file the resolution with the BRESA agency board. Yes: Unanimous.

Overnight/extended student trips: The board voted to approve the art and Spanish trip to Peru in June 2018. Yes: Unanimous.

Board policies — first reading: The board voted to approve the first reading of the revised, new and deleted policies. Yes: Unanimous.

Niles Township (May 15)

Voting equipment: The Niles Township Board of Trustees voted to approve a resolution to submit a grant application for the purchase of voting equipment. Yes: Unanimous.

Harra Road: Board members voted to adopt a resolution amending a special assessment district for Harrah Road recognizing amended costs. Yes: Unanimous

Firefighter assignments: Board members voted to approve the recommendation of Niles Township Fire Chief Gary Brovold and the Safety Committee to terminate volunteer firefighter Austin Coger as of May 12. Yes: Unanimous.
