A Benton Harbor man was airlifted to the hospital after he and another man were injured in a traffic crash outside the city Wednesday afternoon, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the sheriff’s office were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on M-62 nearby Lyons Industries in Silver Creek Township at around 5:25 p.m.

According to police, the accident occured after a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Adam Tyszka, of Cassopolis, was traveling east on M-62 when he crossed the centerline, striking a vehicle driven by 77-year-old Richard Schuenenman, of Benton Harbor, who was traveling west.

Emergency personnel extracted Schuenenman from his vehicle, and called in a helicopter from Air Care to transport him to Bronson Memorial Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment.

Tyszka’s vehicle rolled over due to the impact of the collision. The driver was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for his injuries.

Both drivers wore seat belts. Alcohol and excess speed do not appear to have played a role in the crash, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Officers with the Silver Creek Township Police Department and Pokagon Tribal Police, and crews with Pride Care Ambulance, Air Care Helicopter and Indiana Lake Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.
