One of Dowagiac’s most beloved summertime traditions will continue beginning later this month.

Fitch Camp will reopen for its 76th season on Tuesday, June 20. Dowagiac second- through seventh-grade students are eligible to attend the camp, located on Cable Lake, which costs $1 per day to attend.

Registered second- through fourth-grade students will attend camp on Mondays and Wednesdays through July 25, while fifth- through seventh- will attend Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 26.

The camp will be closed July 4.

As with previous years, the $1 daily fee covers lunch and a snack, as well as transportation. Buses will pick up campers at the following sites:

• Kincheloe Elementary School

• Justus Gage Elementary School

• Patrick Hamilton Elementary School

• Dowagiac Middle School

• St. John’s Day Care

• Eagle’s Woods Apartments

Parents who wish to register their children for the camp may pick up forms at the front office of the elementary schools or middle school, or may find them online on the Dowagiac Union Schools website, at dowagiacschools.org.

Fitch Camp has been in operation since 1941, when E. Root Fitch endowed the camp program with its current property at 506000 Fitch Road, along with financial assistance. Thanks to contributions from the community, organizers are able to provide activities and meals to children for a low price.

“Kids get a full day’s worth of fun and excitement for just a dollar,” said Dave Mahar, president of Fitch Camp Foundation board. “It’s just fantastic. It’s a great experience.”

Among the activities planned for this season include swimming, swimming lessons, canoeing, fishing, tennis, volleyball, scooter hockey, kickball, softball and crafts. In addition, CPR/first aid instructors, and local fire and law enforcement personnel are expected to drop by to teach children more about their professions.

“It’s a great place for learning and a great place to have fun,” Mahar said.
