Niles, Brandywine pick up wins at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME — A seventh-run third inning helped host Brandywine defeat Reading 15-1 in non-conference baseball at Notre Dame Tuesday.

Toby Fox led off the bottom half of the third inning with a triple and following back-to-back walks, Max Douglas was hit by a pitch to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bobcats.

Taylor Casey was also hit by a pitch to make it 3-0 and when Connor Janowiak was walked the Brandywine lead ballooned to 4-0.

JeRod Glenn drove in a run with a ground out and Janowiak scored on a passed ball before Caleb Cole capped the inning with a squeeze bunt to make it 8-0.

Casey finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Glenn also drove in three runs. Duval tripled and drove in a run for the Bobcats, who improve to 12-14-1.

Fox worked the first three innings, allowing three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Joey Covyeou worked two innings and Scott Miller worked the sixth. The two combined for one run on one hit with five strikeouts.

The Bobcats will face arch rival Buchanan in the semifinals, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Niles baseball

NOTRE DAME — Jakob Huffman drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Niles edged Vicksburg 3-2 in a non-conference baseball game at Notre Dame’s Eck Stadium Tuesday.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jake Lalone singled in between a pair of hit-by-pitches to Dawson Clemens and Bryce Lake, which loaded the bases for Huffman, who singled to centerfield to drive in pinch runner Trey Scott with the game winning run.

Niles led 1-0 after scoring in the first inning, but Vicksburg took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Both teams went through a combined seven pitchers as they prepared for the upcoming Division 2 district tournament.

Jacob Hamm, who came on in the seventh and retired the side, picked up the victory for the Vikings.

Jakob Huffman started and worked two innings before giving way to brother Drew Huffman, who worked the third and fourth frames. Tayton Stevens worked the fifth and sixth for Niles.

Matt Holman, the third pitcher for the Bulldogs, suffered the loss.

Niles finished with five hits, including a double by Drew Huffman.

Lalone had a pair of hits for the Vikings, who face Dowagiac in the second game of the district semifinals at Niles High School. The game is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The championship game is set for 3 p.m.
