Lakeshore wrapped up the SMAC West Division championship with a sweep of host Niles Monday.

The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but with rain in the forecast the doubleheader was moved up a day.

The Lancers took the opening game 12-2 in five innings and then completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in the nightcap.

The Vikings managed just seven hits in the two games as Lakeshore pitcher Taylor Simon shut down Niles. She finished the day without giving up an earned run and striking out 14.

“Well the first inning kind of summed up our night,” said Niles coach Rick McKeel. “That’s not the start we were looking for. I liked the way we bounced back in game two.  We have plenty of work to do to get ready for our remaining games in preparation for districts.”

Lakeshore scored nine runs in the first inning of the opening game and never looked back.

The Lancers (25-5-1, 7-1 West) added two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth.

Niles scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth.

Brooke Timm took the loss for the Vikings with relief help from Kelsey Barkman, who came on in the fourth inning.

Addison Davies and Timm both had singles for Niles.

In the nightcap, a pair of three-run innings sandwiched a two-run inning to account for Lakeshore’s scoring.

Niles scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning, but could not make up the early deficit.

Aynslee Myer was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Vikings, who also got hits from Sadie Fountain and Taylor Gibson.

Niles drops to 12-19 overall and finished SMAC West action 1-7.
