LANSING — Michigan residents could purchase a license plate to help support the families of fallen police officers under legislation co-sponsored by Sen. John Proos that was approved on Thursday by the state Senate.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe and respond in times of crisis, and too often these brave men and women never return home,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “Since last May, eight officers have been killed in the line of duty in Michigan, and nationally 143 officers lost their lives last year in service to their communities.

“As we remember the sacrifice of Michigan’s fallen law enforcement officers during National Police Week, I was proud to support legislation to help assist the families of injured or deceased officers during their time of need.”

In 1962, to salute the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and their families, Congress established May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week on which it falls as National Police Week.

Senate Bill 77, sponsored by Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, would create a new fundraising license plate benefitting the Thin Blue Line of Michigan. For each plate purchased, $25 would go the nonprofit organization, which provides financial and legal support for the families of law enforcement officers who are severely injured or killed in the line of duty.

“Our law enforcement officers serve and protect the residents of Michigan,” Proos said. “Sadly, observations like police week are reminders that their work is often dangerous and too often ends in tragedy. We cannot bring back those killed in the line of duty or erase the pain felt by the family and friends left behind, but this measure could give Michigan residents a chance to show their appreciation and offer their support.”

SB 77 now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
