Whirlpool Corporation will host the second annual “Rock the Boat” cardboard boat races on Thursday, July 20, at the Inn at Harbor Shores, with all proceeds benefiting United Way of Southwest Michigan.

“Whirlpool Corporation is excited to host the second annual cardboard boat race to raise funds for United Way of Southwest Michigan. We’re looking forward to watching the event grow this year — with more boats, more volunteers, and even more fun for the whole family,” said Liz Door, United Way campaign chair for Whirlpool Corporation.

The life-size boats are made of cardboard, duct tape and polyurethane, and powered entirely by human paddling. Companies such as Whirlpool, AEP Cook Nuclear Power Plant, North Pier Brewing Company and United Way of Southwest Michigan assembled their vessels last year.

“This race isn’t just about speed. We have a panel of judges lined up to vote on most creative boat and best themed boat, so you never know what you’re going to see,” said Anna Murphy, president of United Way of Southwest Michigan. “We are excited to be partnering with Whirlpool again. We hope for another great turnout this summer.”

AEP, Cook Nuclear Plant built the fastest boat last year, while United Way of Southwest Michigan took home the prizes for Most Creative boat and Best Themed boat.

The event is open to the public. There will be food and T-shirts available for sale.

The deadline to register boats is Thursday, July 6, and the entry fee is $250. Cardboard will be made available after May 23 at Riverside LDC, 2000 First Street, Building C in Riverside.
