Kay Noreen Smith, 86, of Eagle Lake in Edwardsburg, passed to her rest after an illness Saturday, May 13, 2017, at her home.
She was born May 9, 1931, at Marquette, the daughter of Norman and Clio (Anderson) Shanahan.
She attained a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education from Michigan State University, and taught at Brandywine in Niles and in Elkhart, Indiana.
Kay was married in 1953 to William Kenneth Farmer at Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church. He has passed.
She then married Ray C. Smith in 1993 at Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church. Ray survives.
Kay was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Her children are Karen Fisette, Sharon (Don) Kantz and Diane Farmer. Her stepchildren are Sharon (Wayne) Hardin, Douglas (LouAnn) Smith, Eric (Karen) Smith, Andy (Melony) Smith and David Smith. She has 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She also has 13 step-grandchildren and 29 step-great-grandchildren. There is a sister, Lynne Shanahan.
Family who have passed are her parents and two brothers, Richard Shanahan and Kim Shanahan.
Kay has been a long-time resident of Edwardsburg, a member of the Edwardsburg Historical Museum, the Monday Evening Club, an active member of the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a monthly book club, a bridge club and Sigma Delta Pi Sorority. She obtained a private pilot’s license. She was always interested in history, travel and genealogy, and she always won at Trivial Pursuit.
There will be a cremation memorial service for Kay at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, where all may gather starting an hour before the service at Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, 68961 Lake St., Edwardsburg. Officiating will be the Rev Scott Scheel, pastor of the church. Inurnment will be in Edwardsburg Cemetery at a later date.
