Andrew Flick, Vanya Ruppart, Madeline Stanton and Dawson Clemens were honored at the annual Niles sports awards recently.

Flick and Ruppart received the Ed Weede MVP awards.

Flick set a new mark in wrestling by earning all-state four consecutive years. He set a new school record with more than 150 career wins, is Niles’ all-time pin leader with more than 100 career pins and was captain on three state final four teams.

Flick said that earning all-state his freshman year is one of his most meaningful accomplishments at Niles, along with beating St. Johns last February.

His advice to incoming freshmen is to work hard and enjoy it.

“It goes by faster than you think,” he said.

He plans on attending college and work towards a career as a conservation officer.

Flick was a four-year letterman in wrestling.

Ruppart was named both the swimming and track MVPs.

She currently holds school swim records in two individual races and two relays. The relay is also a conference record. She has qualified for the Division 1 state swim meet every year. Ruppart has earned individual academic all-state honors as well as being a member of the four-time all-state team.

She plans to study mechanical engineering at Case Western where she will also continue her swimming career.

Ruppart’s advice to new athletes is “come in with a good attitude and the expectation to work extremely hard. Do not get discouraged because a bad performance happens to everyone. Work hard do your best and enjoy the experience.”

Ruppart, who has a GPA of 4.222, was a four-year letterwinner in both track and swimming.

The Joseph Whitwam Sportsmanship award winners were Stanton and Clemens.

Stanton has competed in cross country and track for the Vikings while balancing her studies at the math and science center.

Stanton will attend Hope College and work towards a biochemistry degree while

heading to a pre-med track.

Her favorite experience was winning the tied track meet against St Joe as the last leg of the last race and having the entire team cheer her on.

Her advice is to “work hard and be proud.”

Stanton, who has a GPA of 4.17, is a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track.

Clemens carries a GPA of 3.4.

His most enjoyable moment was going to MHSAA quarterfinals last year in baseball and “doing something everyone said we couldn’t accomplish,” he said.

His advice to young Vikings is do not blow off your freshman year.

“Try your best,” he said. “Study hard and remember grades are always more important. Clemens is planning on attending the University of Oregon to study graphic design or Business.

Clemens played football, basketball and baseball at Niles.
