The Cassopolis Veterans of Foreign Wars William E. Lozier Post 10704 will host the village’s annual Memorial Day parade is set for May 29.

Post officials are seeking participants for this year’s parade, which will step off at 10 a.m. from behind the VFW in front of the post office and will again use both sides of the road to line up. The parade will wind around onto Broadway and head up to Prospect Hill Cemetery where military honors, including “Taps” and a gun salute, will be conducted.

Those who are participating in the parade should be behind the VFW near the post office by 9:30 a.m.

“Memorial Day is different than Veterans Day,” said Chris Bergen. “This is a day to remember our fallen warriors versus Veterans Day where we typically thank our surviving veterans. This should be a solemn remembrance. Yes, we try to bring people in to join us with our Memorial Day ceremony down at Prospect Hill. It takes a very short time. We have all the veterans down there and we shoot off the rifles and play ‘Taps’ and memorialize.”

Bergen said that the VFW is inviting any and all groups to participate in this year’s parade.

School-aged children may once again decorate and ride their bikes in the parade. They will be judged and $25 gift cards will be awarded in three different grade categories.

Following the parade and ceremonies at the cemetery, all veterans are invited to return to Post 10704 for a lunch, which is being provided by the Cassopolis Fire Department.

Anyone interested in participating in this year’s parade should contact Bergen at (404) 201-0501. Bergen asks that those who want to participate call in advance so that they have an idea of how many units will be participating and that they are recognized as the parade passes the historic courthouse.
