Roundup: Vikings split, Buchanan sweeps Berrien

PORTAGE — Visiting Niles split a SMAC West Division doubleheader against Portage Central Tuesday.

After dropping the first game 9-1, the Vikings rebounded to defeat the Mustangs 5-2.

Niles (7-9) opened up a 5-1 lead on Portage Central as it had 11 hits, including two each from Bryce Lake, Drew Huffman, Jakob Huffman and Keegan Neumann.

Drew Huffman, Jakob Huffman and Neumann all doubled.

Austin Curran worked six innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to pick up the win for the Vikings.

Lake pitched the seventh inning and earned a save.

In the opening game, Niles scored a single run in the third inning and had just six hits against the Mustangs.

Lake was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Berrien Springs at Buchanan

Host Buchanan allowed just 10 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Berrien Springs in BCS Athletic Conference baseball Tuesday.

Kyle Leazenby tossed a six-hitter with four strikeouts in the opening game, which the Bucks won 3-0.

Jacob Hearington and Dalton Riddle both were 2-for-3. Riddle doubled and drove in a run.

In the nightcap, Riddle worked into the seventh inning, allowing one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts as the Bucks edged the Shamrocks 2-1.

Tanner Lilly pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning to earn the save.

The winning run came in the bottom on the seventh inning on an RBI single by Riddle, which scored Jacob Hoover.

Riddle was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Chad Adkerson doubled.

Brandywine at Parchment

PARCHMENT — Brandywine scored three runs in the top of the fifth to defeat host Parchment 7-5 and gain a split in its BCS Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader.

The Bobcats (9-10-1) dropped the opening game 4-3.

In the nightcap, Brady Duval, Max Douglass and Caleb Cole each had to hits for Brandywine. Duval also drove in a pair of runs.

Joey Covyeou went the distance, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

In the opener, the Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the victory.

Duval took the loss in relief of starter Toby Fox.

Fox was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Scott Miller was also 2-for-4 with a double.
