Elderly man dies after being struck by fallen tree

PORTER TOWNSHIP — A Cass County man died Friday afternoon after a tree fell on him while he was in the process of cutting it down, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched to a reported accidental death on the 12000 block of Old 112 in Porter Township around 2:07 p.m. The officers discovered the body of 83-year-old Gordon Jackson on the scene.

The police’s investigation, based on physical evidence collected at the scene, suggested Jackson was in the process of cutting down a large tree on the property when it broke free, smashing and killing him.

Crews with the Porter Township Fire Department and the SEPSA Ambulance Service assisted deputies during the call.
