Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Shelby Jackson

Shelby Jackson is a junior on the Dowagiac softball team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

SJ: Playing on varsity for districts as a freshman.

 

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

SJ: Struck out with the bases loaded against South Haven.

 

What has been a hardship in your life?

SJ: My dad living so far away.

 

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

SJ: Coach (Nicky) Hulett, because she has helped me improve a lot from travel ball.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

SJ: When I am up to bat.

 

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

SJ: In travel ball last year a ball bounced off my glove and went under the fence, so I climbed under the fence to get it.

How do you tend to work out/train when by yourself?

SJ: Sometimes I take extra swings at home.

 

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

SJ: I would like to play tennis. I heard it was a good workout.

 

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

SJ: Because it introduces you to new friends you would never think of having.

 

How would you give away $50,000?

SJ: I would donate it to a cancer benefit.

 

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

SJ: I would chose our team at Dowagiac and make coach B (Mike Behke) my assistant.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

SJ: I would probably get a job.

 

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

SJ: the most challenging thing to do is to not yell at coach D (Mark Dzakowic) when he cannot hit a fly ball.

 

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

SJ: I would change the three outs rule so we have to have two.

 

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

SJ: That my bat is finally coming around by coach Behnke.

 

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

SJ: The scariest thing I had to do was catch for Taylor (Hulett) last year. I was so nervous.

 

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

SJ: My favorite hobby is going to the beach, because I love the sun.
