A Southwestern Michigan College student suspected of cutting her boyfriend with a knife during an argument in a college dormitory Thursday is in police custody, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers with the department were dispatched to a reported suicide attempt at SMC’s McKenzie Hall around 11:25 a.m. Thursday.

When police arrived, they met a 20-year-old SMC student, who told the officers he had been cut by the suspect, his girlfriend, during an argument between the two. The victim said the woman grabbed the knife and attempted to stab herself with it. She then slashed him when he tried to take the weapon away from her.

Both were transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac. The victim was treated for nonlethal injuries and released, while the suspect was evaluated by hospital staff and was taken back into police custody.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Authorities lodged the suspect at Cass County Jail on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and aggravated domestic violence. Police are withholding her name from the public pending her arraignment in county court.

Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the Pokagon Tribal Police Department and staff members with the college assisted Dowagiac police at the scene.
