What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any programs, and all programs are free. Tuesday, April 25

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Participants may join the library each Tuesday for a special storytime tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the country of the month.

• 2 and 5 p.m. — Geo Treckers

Globetrotters may join the library to take a tour of the world.  Each month, the group will focus on a different country through stories, crafts, a snack, and other surprises. In April, the group will be exploring Mexico.  Treckers will leave with a list of books and additional activities in case they want to explore that country more on their own.  For ages 6 and older.

• 6 p.m. — Women’s 12 Step Meeting

Drop-ins are welcome.

• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

Chips and Chapters is a read-aloud storytime. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while participants eat chips and follow along.

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

Pajama Storytime is an evening of three stories, music, movement and a craft. Feel free to wear your pajamas and bring the whole family.

• 6:30 p.m. — Olive Branch Book Club at The Brass Eye Cocktail Lounge

Book lovers are invited be a part of the first bar book club in Niles.  To register and pick up a copy of the book “Rebel Queen” by Michelle Moran, come to the library’s information desk, or call (269) 683-8545 ext. 112. Olive Branch meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Brass Eye, 205 N. Second St., Niles. 

Wednesday, April 26

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth to 18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months to 3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3 to 5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Michigan Works! Talent Development Specialists

Michigan Works! will be at the Niles District Library every other Wednesday afternoon. Staff from the Michigan Works! offices in Dowagiac and Benton Harbor will be at the library to assist job seekers. Talent development specialists can help job seekers register for unemployment, evaluate their strengths and skills, create or update their resume and sharpen their interview skills. • 4 to 7 p.m. — Coupon exchange

Couponers may join Ann in the youth services area for a weekly coupon exchange. This program is open to teens and adults.   

Thursday, April 27

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

This program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one stop shop for help when housing is threatened, or for referrals and information. Representatives will be at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday.  For questions or information, call Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.

• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Positive Parenting Program

This program is for parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills that will promote their child’s development and potential.  Discussion group topics will include: Positive Parenting, Dealing with Disobedience, Managing Fighting & Aggression, Developing Good Bedtime Routines and Hassle-Free Shopping with Children. • 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play.  Other board games are also available.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens may hang out from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays for a night of fun dedicated to them.  The library has games, snacks, books and a place to study in the teen department. 

Friday, April 28

• 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Using “The Cloud”

This program is designed for people who would like to learn how to use Google Drive, Google Docs and Gmail. To register, call (269) 683-8545 ext. 112, email CommunityEngagement@nileslibrary.net, or stop by the information desk at the library. For the morning class, participants are asked to enter via the side door near the handicapped parking spots. For the evening class, participants are asked to arrive before the library closes at 6 p.m.

• 10 a.m. to noon — Special Edition: Craft Day

Special Edition is a weekly series of programs designed to be accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs. This week, the group will be making tote bags out of old T-shirts.

• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Participants may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on their own yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome; a teacher and a few loaner tools will be available to help you get started.

Saturday, April 29

• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the library

Yogis may take the time to do something great for themselves while reaping the health and relaxation benefits of yoga. This free class is for all abilities. Bring a yoga mat and some water. If you do not have a yoga mat, the library will have a limited number of mats to borrow.

• Noon to 2 p.m. — Niles Community Gardens sign-up

Greenthumbs may get ready for spring by signing up for a garden plot through Niles Community Gardens.

• 1 to 2 p.m. — Teen’s Book Cover Bingo

A twist on the traditional game. There will be snacks and prizes for all who attend.
