Bucks rally to beat Brandywine

A three-run top half of the seventh inning sparked a Buchanan sweep in BCS Athletic Conference Red Division baseball Tuesday.

The Bucks (4-2, 2-0 Red) trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh.

With one out in the seventh, Chad Adkerson hit the ball to Brandywine shortstop JeRod Glenn, who appeared to have an easy double play opportunity, but booted the ball allowing both runners to be safe.

Devin Welsh’s slow roller to third base was fielded by Toby Fox, but his throw was wide of first base allowing the tying run to score.

Tanner Lilly’s ground ball back to Brandywine pitcher Brady Duval scored the inning’s third and final run as the throw home was too late.

“It was a frustrating night,” said Brandywine coach David Sidenbender. “I felt we played good at times but not good enough. Joey (Covyeou) pitched well and so did Brady. We just have to be mentally tougher in ‘big’ situations, and that is something we can get better at.”

Covyeou allowed one earned run in six-plus innings of work, while Duval did not give up the earned run in relief.

Dalton Riddle worked the first two innings before giving way to Brad VanOverberghe, who picked up the victory.

Alex Becvar had a pair of doubles in the opener for the Bucks.

Taylor Casey doubled for Brandywine, which finished with only four hits.

A five-run second inning gave the Bucks control of the nightcap, which it never relinquished.

Kyle Leazenby scattered five hits to earn the victory.

Fox took the loss for the Bobcats.

Jacob Hoover, Christian Hall and Becvar all had two hits for Buchanan. Hall had a double.

Duval and Max Douglass both doubled for Brandywine.
