The Dowagiac soccer team has scored five goals so far this season and Kellyn Daly has all of them.

Daly scored four times in the second half Saturday as the Chieftains defeated visiting Cassopolis 4-1.

The two were originally supposed to be part of the Chieftain Invitational, but when Three Rivers dropped out of the round robin tournament the two teams played a regulation match.

Daly scored less than four minutes into the second half to give Dowagiac a 1-0 advantage.

The Rangers’ Zoey DeVries tied the score two minutes later off a corner kick.

Daly then scored a trio of goals in a 15-minute span to give the Chieftains their first win of the season.

“I’m excited for our team on our first victory, especially being the Chieftain Invitational,” Dowagiac coach Chad Davis said. “The girls showed confidence and effort throughout the whole game. I told them at halftime to stay together and we will turn it up a notch and that’s exactly what they did. I’m very proud of the effort in the second half.

“Are standout player Kellyn Daly had an amazing game Saturday with four goals and five on the season in just three games. She is an exceptional athlete. With that being said, we try to utilize her speed and talent up top and should be a nightmare for teams to try and cover her. That should open up the doors for the Lady Chieftains to have success in other areas.”

Dowagiac outshot Cassopolis 14-11 with Chieftain goalkeeper Grace Younger making 10 saves.

The Rangers’ Madison Suseland finished with six saves.

Cassopolis was back on the pitch Monday night at Buchanan in a BCS Athletic Conference non-divisional match.

The Chieftains return to action Wednesday when they host Vicksburg in the Wolverine Conference opener.
