On Saturday, April 22, Niles will celebrate Earth Day from noon to 3 p.m. in Riverfront Park by cleaning up the park and making crafts.
This year marks the 47th anniversary of Earth Day, the tradition started in 1970, with the aim to help people come together to celebrate earth’s natural wonders and promote environmental causes, which benefit people everywhere.
For Earth Day, the Girl Scout Troop 30455 is teaming up with the Niles History Center and Niles District Library for a park clean-up, Earth Day activities, and crafts focused on recycling and the importance of native plants and natural habitats.
Activities and crafts will take place at Riverfront Park’s amphitheater-rain or shine. The City will supply vinyl gloves and trash bags for participants and a prize will be awarded for collecting the most trash.
The event is free and all are welcome.
History Center Director Christina Arseneau said Riverfront Park is special to members of the Niles community
“Riverfront Park is truly a community gem and offers something for everyone: a walking trail, playground, fishing docks, picnic tables, grills, and more, all with the beautiful backdrop of the St. Joseph River,” Arseneau said. “We are excited for this family fun event and hope to raise awareness about preserving the natural beauty of Niles.”
The Niles Going Green will also offer an opportunity for photo enthusiasts to capture a moment for the #NilesisBeautiful photography contest sponsored by the City of Niles.
