STURGIS — Despite getting a solid pitching performance out of senior Mack Charles, the visiting Dowagiac baseball team was swept by Sturgis Thursday.

Charles tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts in the Chieftains’ 1-0 loss to the Trojans in the second game of the Wolverine Conference South Division doubleheader.

Sturgis (3-2, 2-0 South) had no trouble with Dowagiac (3-4, 0-2 South) in the opener, winning 9-1.

Sturgis scored the lone run of the opening game in the third inning as Drew Murphy was hit by a pitch and then stole second and third. Murphy scored on a sacrifice fly by Brecken Stewart, who was the winning pitcher.

Ellijah Williams, Collin Hassle and Kade Schriber all singled for the Chieftains.

In the opening game, Sturgis scored three runs in the fourth and two runs in both the fifth and six to break open a 2-1 contest.

Sam Leck and Drew Murphy both doubled for the Trojans.

Dowagiac finished with three hits, all singles.
