Deputies respond to dog attack on children

CALVIN TOWNSHIP — Three people, including two children, were hospitalized Sunday after a dog mauled them at a residence in Calvin Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department responded to a reported dog mauling at the 63000 block on Crooked Creek at 5:41 p.m. According to police, 44-year-old Jennifer Hansford, of Cassopolis, was trying to save the lives of a 2-year-old and 6-year-old from an aggressive dog when the deputies arrived.

Police apprehend the aggressive dog. The canine is currently in custody with Cass County Animal Control, where it will be held for a 10-day quarantine period, after which leaders will decide what to do with it.

Hansford and the 6-year-old were transported by EMS to Lakeland Hospital in Niles for treatment, where they were later released.

The 2-year-old was airlifted by Medlife to South Bend Memorial Hospital, and was later transported to Riley’s Children’s Hospital for treatment of severe head trauma. The toddler is currently in stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation. The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for possible criminal charges.

Crews with Pride Care Ambulance, Life Care Ambulance, MedLife Helicopter and Penn Township Fire Department and officers with Cass County Animal Control assisted deputies on the scene.

Man injured in motorcycle crash 

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — A Cassopolis man was hospitalized after he lost control of motorcycle while driving through Jefferson Township Sunday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department responded to a reported accident at the intersection of Robinson Road near Mt. Zion around 5:47 p.m. Police learned that 45-year-old Brian Klink was driving northbound on his motorcycle when he lost control of the vehicle.

Klink was transported by Edwardsburg Ambulance to St. Joseph Medical Center in Mishawaka for treatment of his injuries. Klink’s passenger, 45-year-old Debora Klink, also of Cassopolis, was treated and released at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the accident.

Officers with the Edwardsburg Police Department and crews with Edwardsburg Ambulance assisted deputies at the crash site.
