The Cass County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was called to action Saturday in order to track down the driver of a crashed vehicle who fled from the scene of the accident in Newburg Township, according to a release from the department.
According to authorities, deputies with the sheriff’s office were dispatched to a campground at the 12000 block of Prang Street around 6:53 p.m. on reports of a traffic crash on the property.
Upon arrival, police learned that the driver, a 43-year-old Elkhart woman, had gotten into an argument with witnesses at the scene before fleeing into some nearby woods. Police believe the suspect was intoxicated at the time.
To locate the woman, the deputies called in the department’s K-9, Faust. The police dog spent about 10 minutes tracking her before they found her lying down in the woods.
The driver was taken by police to the crash site, where crew members with the Newburg Township Ambulance treated her. Afterwards she was detained by police and lodged in county jail on suspicions of operating while intoxicated causing a traffic crash, open container and leaving the scene of a traffic crash.
Police do not know if the woman was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, though they believe alcohol was a contributing factor.
Crews with the Newburg Township Fire Department and ambulance assisted deputies at the scene.
