To celebrate March as National Reading Month, students at Merritt Elementary got to finish out the month with some quality reading time, during Jammies in the Gym last week.
Students, teachers and parents dressed in pajamas and brought blankets and pillows for the afterschool event.
Students also got to walk away with some new reading material.
Better World Books donated approximately 80 boxes of books to the school and students got to select up to 15 books to take home with them.
Clad in penguin-adorned pajamas, principal and soon-to-be-superintendent Karen Weimer read aloud to students as she sat in a rocking chair.
To match this year’s theme of “reading is sweet” those who participated in the event got to eat ice cream while they enjoyed their new books.
The event is one that Weimer said has garnered more participation every year.
“First of all they are excited to come back to the school at night,” Weimer said. “And then to be with their parents and to be in their pajamas.”
